See Mr. Wilkie to get involved!
Volunteer Now consists of students who volunteer in support of both local and international concerns. For instance, the club has supported the Lion’s Food Drive locally in Port Colborne and the concept of Fair Trade internationally.
The club was formed in 2005 with support from the Free The Children organization. Over the years, the club has fundraised to build a school in Sierra Leone, provided disaster relief for earthquake victims in Haiti and Japan, provided famine relief for the country of Darfur and raised a substantial donation for McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton.
This year, the club again helped with the Lion’s Food Drive. As well, Volunteer Now promoted the Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” campaign with over 90 shoeboxes being donated from within Port Colborne High School. Other activities will include distributing chocolate in the Santa Parade as part of the initiative to support Fair Trade in Port Colborne, selling Dress-Down Day Stickers in support of the school’s benevolent fund, creating Christmas parcels of food and gifts for the Salvation Army’s Adopt a Family Program, and helping out with 10 000 Villages Fair Trade sales for the holidays. Students will also be taking A Vow of Silence for 1 day to raise awareness of children’s issues such as child labour for those who do not have a voice in society.
Volunteer Now meets at lunch in Room 104 once or twice a month to organize activities and eat Pringles. We enjoyed a report this year on Carly Richardson’s volunteer trip to Africa to build a school in Kenya. New members are always welcome.
