Terry Fox Walk hits home for many at PCHS

High school is all about broadening one’s horizons, learning something new and making the experience a memorable one. That is why Port Colborne High School’s Student Council is excited about two major upcoming events.
On Thursday, September 26th, the Blue Bears will be walking through the streets of Port Colborne in remembrance of Terry Fox. This walk is to raise awareness about cancer and remember those who have battled the disease. Port High’s foyer is smattered with stickers that were purchased by students to honour or remember a loved one who has won, or lost, his or her battle with cancer. A barbeque lunch is also provided for students after the walk.
Carly Johnson, a Blue Bear cancer survivor, says that the Terry Fox Walk has a special meaning for her. “Being a survivor, since the young age (of 3), has shown me that life isn’t always fair but it’s definitely possible to beat this disease and continue a completely normal life,” said Johnson.
Furthermore, Carson Boutilier, a PCHS student who has battled against cancer for 18 years, says that this walk hits home for him. “It has been a long bumpy road,” said Boutilier. “(The Terry Fox Walk) is not only meaningful for myself. Port High also walks in remembrance of two of our own, Neil Peppas and Mr. Chris Cairns.” Boutilier has lost his mother and aunt to cancer within the last month.
In addition, Student Council has planned a “Hoe-down Throw-down Welcome Back” dance on Thursday, September 26th. The dance will be held from 7-9pm under a tent on the school’s football field and tickets can be purchased ahead of time for $2 or at the door for $3. This dance will introduce new grade 9’s to the student body, and will create community spirit. It will also give Student Council the opportunity to make Port High their own, which will help these students become leaders in the school and beyond.
“The Hoe-down Throw-down dance is going to be a great way to start this school year,” said Victoria McIntyre, a grade 10 student. “I’m very excited for what Student Council has in store.”
Port High’s Student Council is very excited about these two events and encourages all Blue Bears to come out and show school spirit.
