Artistic Spin On Life

They’re holding their opening reception this Saturday (Jan. 28) and the art will be on display until Feb. 26. Art students at Port Colborne High School were only bounds by the limits of their own imagination.
“They transformed everyday objects and materials into something new,” said art teacher Dawn Mayne.
This weekend Arts Place Gallery will be hosting an opening reception for the artwork of senior students in Mayne’s classes. The students, as part of the final practical exams, were tasked with creating a piece of art from regular objects you find around the house. And creative did they get. The display is titled “Art in the Everyday Life.”
From an old encyclopedia that was turned into a decorative box container, to a pencil holder created from a phone book, the students let their imagination run wild.
“This wasn’t even my first idea, it was my second,” said Grade 12 student Emilia Reber, pointing to her artwork, a coffee table with a hanging garden.
Reber found the table on the side of the road and immediately thought of all the possibilities. She originally wanted to decorate it in a carousel theme, but when that didn’t work she decided to make the garden theme.
