With the help of art students at Port Colborne High School you can have a frighteningly good Halloween display.

And you’ll be helping the United Way of South Niagara at the same time.

Last week students in Dawn Mayne’s Grade 10 art class decorated pumpkins, helping out Meridian Credit Union’s latest fundraiser for the United Way. The credit union will be selling roughly 150 decorated pumpkins, with the proceeds going to the United Way.

“We’re happy to give back to this event,” said Mayne. The Meridian has a scholarship for graduating Port High students, and provides other support for the school so Mayne said it was a no brainer to help out with the project.

Andrea Stapleton, member services representative at Meridian Credit Union in Port Colborne, said this is the first time they’ve done a pumpkin sale, but the business routinely supports the United Way.

“It’s the No. 1 charity we support,” she said, adding the programs funded by the United Way means by supporting it Meridian is supporting a wide variety of people in the city.

Money from United Way helps fund Port Cares, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Niagara and many other local charities.

“Its raises money so those other charities don’t have to worry as much about fundraising,” Stapleton said.

The pumpkins, along with others painted by Meridian staff, will be on sale throughout the month of October. Anyone can stop by the Port Colborne branch on Clarence Street and pick one up for $5.

Meridian is also holding a bake sale Wednesday and Thursday to raise more money for the United Way.

The branch is located at 43 Clarence St.
