Community Involvement Requirement in Ontario
Community Service is one of the requirements for achieving an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students are required to complete forty hours of community service.
For students in DSBN secondary schools, the forty hours are recorded in Hour Republic. Hour Republic is access through the DSBN Student Portal.
2022-23 Graduates
For students graduating in the 2022-23 school year, the requirement for hours has been restored to 40 hours.
Completed hours must be recorded through Hour Republic in D2L.
More flexible options are available for community involvement hours. At the principal’s discretion:
- Students may be allowed to earn hours during the time allotted for the school day, or duties normally performed in the home. Examples include walking a younger child to and from school, helping younger siblings with schoolwork.
- Students aged 14 or older can count a maximum of 10 hours from paid employment. Students counting paid employment will be required to complete a reflection exercise indicating how their work contributed to the service for others.
