PCHS Alumni earns top scholarship

Oct 23, 2020

Tribune - Emily Wilson has found the prescription for success.

She implemented it during her time at Port Colborne High School and now she’s doing the same during her time in medical school at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

The former Port Colborne resident, named youth of the year in 2002 by Port Colborne-Wainfleet Chamber of Commerce, now has another prestigious honour to add to her resume.

Wilson, 27, recently received the 2012 College of Family Physicians of Canada Medical Student Scholarship, one of only 17 handed out across the country.

The fourth-year medical student has applied for family medical residency in Ontario, including the Niagara chapter of McMaster University’s medical program.

Wilson has completed two clinical electives in Niagara as part of her studies — one with Dr. Amanda Bell in her family practice in Port Colborne in December 2011 and the second with geriatric internist Dr. Richard Safranyos this past October in St. Catharines.

Wilson has a keen interest in both geriatric medicine and in vulnerable population medicine.

She traces her passion for medicine to her volunteer work as a candy striper at Port Colborne hospital, which began at the age of 12.

Wilson received her award on Nov. 15 during the CFPC’s family medicine forum in Toronto.

One scholarship is given annually to each of Canada’s medical schools. They are then given to outstanding medical students with career interests in family medicine.
