Records were set at qualifier
dunlopFour records were set at the Niagara Region High School Athletic Association (NRHAA) Zone 3 track and field championship Tuesday in Welland.

Owen Robins went the distance — and then some — competing for Port Colborne High School in junior boys discus and junior boys shot put. He was the top qualifier with record-setting throws in both disciplines to advance to next week’s Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) championship, which also will be held at Welland Centennial Secondary School.

Robins shattered the Zone 3 junior boys discus record of 46.92 metres with a throw of 51.94. Dalton Matiasz set the previous record while attending the former Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School in 2012.

In shot put, Robins threw 15.92 metres, bettering the 14.72 that Ridgeway-Crystal Beach’s Rob Osborn recorded in 2010.

Osborn’s record of 41.94 metres that was set in 2009 also was broken at the first of three qualifiers for the provincial championship. On Tuesday, Centennial’s Jaden Davis topped the field with a throw of 42.66.

Port High’s Dalton Harrietha set the new standard for open boys shot put, intellectually impaired, with a throw of 8.46 metres.

The top four at Zone 3 move on to SOSSA next Wednesday and Thursday with the top five from competition qualifying for the South Regional championship June 1 and 2 in Brampton.

This year’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) track and field championships are set for June 8 to 10 in Ottawa.
